‘Bollywood was always the plan’

- Nikita Deb

Yashita Sharma started her singing career in Bollywood with ‘Haan main jitni martaba’ (All The Best: The Fun Begins; 2009). Since then, she has sung a number of songs such as ‘Chandaniya’ (2 States; 2014), ‘Gallan goodiyan’ (Dil Dhadakne Do; 2015), and now she has crooned a song for the Akshay Kumar-starrer PadMan titled, ‘Sayaani’. “It’s been a good run,” she says, adding that she doesn’t know where she will be five years down the line but hopes to grow.

“It’s nice to see that people love my music. It’s a great feeling. I just hope that it continues that way and I hope I don’t under-deliver.” Yashita comes from a family of singers. Her mother and father were both singers but her father passed away when she was very young. Since then, her mother took it upon herself to train Yashita in music.

“Bollywood was always the plan,” Yashita admits sheepishly. “I was in the 7th standard, when I realised that this [singing] is what I need to do and this is what I should do. So, I just took a call and went ahead with it,” she says. She also sang a remixed version of ‘Yaar mana ni’ in a music video starring Vaani Kapoor, which crossed over four million views on YouTube. She says, “I have grown up listening to old songs, and when I listen to them, I wonder how it would be if I would have sung that song. So, if I am getting an opportunity to sing a famous old song in my way, why would I miss out on that opportunity? When I sang the remake, I made sure that I retained the aesthetic value of the song.”

On singing a song for PadMan she says, “Being a small part of such a necessary project brings me immense pride in the kind of work that I do.”
