Farah feels it is unfair to compare Janhvi with Sridevi
Director Farah Khan, who worked with Sridevi, and has now choreographed the late actor’s daughter, Janhvi, in Dhadak, feels it would be unfair to compare the newcomer with her mother. Farah believes every actor has a different approach to the craft, and their individuality should be respected.
“Janhvi is lovely, and a very good dancer. She picks up really fast [but] to compare her to her mother is the most unfair thing because Sri, by her age, was already a veteran and this is Janhvi’s first film,” reasons Farah.
The choreographer-turneddirector has recreated the popular track Zingat from the Marathi film Sairat for its Hindi remake Dhadak, which marks the acting debut of Jahnvi and Shahid Kapoor’s half-brother Ishaan Khatter.
“When they asked me to do it (recreate the song), I was given two briefs. The director (Shashank Khaitan) wanted it like it was done in the earlier movie, very casual, very organic and Karan wanted it to be a big song.”
When it comes to films, Farah, known for commercial brand of films, believes a welltold story is more important than ‘pseudo-intellectual cinema’. “This year, I really enjoyed watching Lipstick Under My Burkha (2016), which I thought was not only saying something, but was also entertaining.”
Farah, most of whose directorial ventures have featured Shah Rukh Khan, says it took three years for the superstar to say ‘yes’ to Main Hoon Na (2004). “It was also a struggle because I was not making your typical socalled women-should-directonly-a-certain-type-of-movie. I wanted to make a big-budget action movie that had drama. So, I was not falling in that cliché of what people suppose women directors should be making,” she shares.
