When Ahmed taught Sridevi breakdancing

- Yashika Mathur

Besides being a talented artist, late actor Sridevi was also one of the finest dancers Bollywood has ever possessed, and her sudden demise has left a significant dent in the industry.

Choreographer and filmmaker Ahmed Khan, who was part of Sridevi’s blockbuster film Mr India (1987), as a child artist, has many pleasant memories of shooting with the late star.

“Mr India was a film very special to both Sridevi ji and me. There is a scene when a girl dies in a bomb blast. I remember that we were shooting in a hospital and during a break she called me in a room where everyone was sitting, and she said ‘teach me how to break dance’,” recalls Ahmed.

He goes on to add, “I was 11 years old back then, and she wanted me to teach her how to do breakdancing. She learned the basics correctly. Then she said it was going to help her and I didn’t understand it at that point, but later I saw that she did the wave and more steps [that I had taught her] in her song Hawa Hawaii.”

The choreographer misses the legendary actor, who passed away on February 24 in Dubai. “I was close to her, and she will always be an iconic personality. I can never forget that it was after Mr India that my journey to become a good choreographer started,” he says.
