Beyoncé rocks Coachella, reunites with Destiny’s Child

-

Beyoncé returned to the stage in spectacular fashion, with a joyous, homecoming-themed party at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. The singer reunited with a rare reunion of her former girl group Destiny’s Child.

Before a sea of some 100,000 people in the southern California desert, the pop superstar headlined the premier global music festival to end a year-long hiatus from live music after giving birth to her twins. The singer showed no signs of slowing down after the leave, singing and shaking her body for close to two hours, as she led around 100 back-up dancers. Husband and rapper Jay-Z popped up on stage toward the end of her set to join in their song Deja Vu, even if only in a preview of a routine guest appearance.

An audio recording of novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s essay We Should All Be Feminists allowed Queen B a moment to prepare, as she re-emerged, elevated to the stage, part of an unmistakable silhouette of three figures.

Fellow Destiny’s Child members Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams joined her for three of the trio’s songs, including Say My Name.

It was the group’s first reunion since Beyoncé’s Super Bowl halftime show in 2013. The group propelled the Pretty Hurts singer to stardom, but was beset by internal friction.

Beyoncé referred to her bandmates as her “sisters”, and was also joined on the stage by her blood sister, Solange Knowles. The singer had made it clear at the start that Coachella was about reuniting, as an announcer started the show by welcoming guests to her “homecoming”.

After revving up the crowd with fireworks and the boisterous Crazy in Love, Beyonce offered a take on Lift Every Voice and Sing, the unofficial African American national anthem. She later voiced pride to the crowd that she was the first black woman to headline Coachella.
