Casting couch controversy: Bollywood celebrities speaks
After the outrage over choreographer Saroj Khan’s comments, we seek industry folks’ views
ANEES BAZMEE
The filmmaker says, “There are rotten fish in every sea and the same may hold true for Bollywood. But it’s unfair to paint the entire industry with the same brush. There’s a perception that only showbiz indulges in such things, but don’t forget, we’re the largest film industry in the world. Also, Bollywood is an easy target vis-à-vis such things.”
PANKAJ TRIPATHI
The actor says, “I think the casting couch exists on a very unprofessional level. I haven’t experienced or seen it in professional setups. I think if actors work hard on their craft, and if you believe in your ability and craft as an artist, then this won’t affect you.”
SHEKHAR SUMAN
The actor says, “Exploitation of women and the casting couch exists in all spheres of life, and it’s common knowledge. It’s a favour for a favour. It’s totally upon the women to reject it, as no one is being forced. I strongly feel that a man goes only as far as a woman allows him to. Women are definitely not the weaker sex and men are not as strong as they appear to be. They are slimy, meek, and cowards. Just slap and kick them hard where it hurts. Expose them and report the matter to the police.”
RICHA CHADHA
The actor says, “I don’t think Sarojji meant that the prevalence of a casting couch is a good thing. She’s only asking why the film industry gets singled out to highlight the malice of sexual assault. But she says that’s not the only route; that if you have talent, you needn’t make a trade of this kind. In this digital age, if someone decides to make an issue about something, no one can stop them.”
SONU SOOD
The actor says, “Our film industry has always been in the limelight, and sometimes things get blown out of proportion. I believe good and bad people exist in every industry. I’ve never met anyone who told me about experiencing something like that. One needs to carve his or her way out, choosing the right path to achieve their goals. That’s the only way to survive.”
