‘As Ryan Reynolds, I need to have a filter most times’

- Sneha Mahadevan

Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds is one of the funniest actors around. His Twitter timeline is living proof of that. But the actor confesses that most of the humour that he is credited with is something that he ‘cheats with’. While awaiting the release of his next film, Reynolds talks to us about his upcoming film, his knowledge of Bollywood and why he doesn’t understand cricket as a sport.

Bollywood is one of the biggest film industries in the world. How much do you know about Indian films?

I knew that Ranveer Singh was voicing my character in the sequel in Hindi. I have seen a movie of his but I am unable to recall which one it was.

What’s the best part about playing a character, who is allowed to be offensive?

The best part is that I get to play a character that has no filter. As Ryan Reynolds, I need a filter most of the time. I cannot say things straight out of my mind. But sometimes, my filter fails and I end up saying something that I realise I should not have.

How much of your own humour do you bring in to the character?

It’s 70-80 % scripted and 10 % on the fly, and there is this percentage area that seems like it is on the fly but I have written some 10 different versions of a joke right away, so, my cast members would be like ‘what the hell was that?’, and I would be like… I would make it look like I made it all up but I have actually prewritten it. It’s cheating!

India is synonymous with movies and cricket. How much do you know about the sport?

I had played cricket when I was 13 but nobody told me about the rules. Even after the tutorial that I got, I would not be able to play the sport, only because I am ‘an idiot’.
