HEEL, LADIES! NO, WE WON’T!

-

It has been a week already at the 71st Cannes Film Festival (on till May 19), and still the controversies don’t stop hogging the limelight.

The seventh day saw the of discussed Cannes issue, one that has plagued the film fest for years — should women be allowed to wear flats on the red carpet or not? Leading the movement this year was jury member Kristen Stewart, who arrived at the red carpet in heels and a short silver dress, but then took the shoes off, and nimbly climbed up the stairs barefoot, on her way to the premiere of BlacKkKlansman.

The Twilight actor has been vocal about the Cannes rule. “It’s just like you simply cannot ask me to do something that you are not asking him. I get the black-tie thing (at Cannes, boys/men are not allowed to attend a premiere if they don’t wear a black tie) but you should be able to do either version — flats or heels,” she had told Vanity Fair in 2016.

Filmmaker Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman, which is competing for the Palm d’Or, received a standing ovation. The film, starring John David Washington and Adam Driver, is based on a true story about a police officer infiltrating America’s white supremacist group Klu Klux Klan.

Another film that got a thumbs up was the Icelandic film, Women at War, directed by Benedikt Erlingsson.

Also seen at Cannes after a long time was actor John Travolta, whose mob drama, Gotti, directed by Kevin Connolly (aka ‘e’ from the show Entourage) will be screened today. Travolta’s first visit to the festival was at the time of Grease (1978), and 16 years later, for Pulp Fiction (1994), which won the Palm D’Or.
