‘We fell prey to music sharks’

- Anjali Shetty

The Indian electronic duo of Lost Stories, Prayag Mehta, 32, and Rishab Joshi, 27, have made a name for themselves in electronic dance music (EDM) circuit by remixing songs such as ‘Faded’ by Alan Walker and One Republic’s ‘Wherever I go’. In a candid chat, Rishab talks about how their latest EP is all about a collective of likeminded artistes and their interpretation of music.

You recently released the first track of your EP Princess St. Tell us more about it.

It is a collective with our own music. The idea is just to make music and put it out without the business aspect involved. We would do this when we started out but later copyrights, lawyers and other aspects got involved which took away the musical essence. We are capturing the feeling of hearing a song for the first time. It is neither a remix nor an original. We are just putting out our interpretation of that particular song.

How will you be selecting the songs and how often will you be uploading tracks?

The second and third track are ready. The first EP will have three tracks and then we plan to release another one. The idea is to have one track every week eventually. It is going to be a challenge but we are working on it. Each track in a single EP will tell parts of one whole story. It takes time to develop a story and with each track the plot and animations will get bigger and better.

How would you describe your equation as a duo?

We do fight a lot during rehearsals or recordings. I believe any kind of tension is always good in the studio. I remember once Prayag thought a certain melody sounded like another song, and we fought over it for months, but I stood with my musicality and we finally recorded it. We both have heightened emotions that we convert into music. Prayag is more mature because of his age, and I tend to get hyper when it comes to ideas.

What has been your biggest challenge as a duo?

Prayag and I started at a very small level. We were exposed to the world of music at a young age. We fell prey to music sharks and they ripped us off. Now, we see through these people. We, hence, run an academy where we don’t just teach aspirants music but also tell them to beware of such people.
