Life is cold, says Anthony Hopkins, talking about his estranged daughter
Veteran actor Anthony Hopkins says that he doesn’t know if his estranged daughter has children and he doesn’t care.
In an interview with Radio Times, Hopkins, 80, said that he doesn’t know if his estranged daughter Abigail, 48, has made him a grandfather. “I don’t have any idea,” said the actor, who has won a Best Actor Oscar (for the 1991 film Silence of the Lambs), and has been nominated three times. He added, “People break up. Families split and, you know, ‘Get on with your life.’ People make choices. I don’t care one way or the other.”
Abigail Hopkins is the daughter from the actor’s first marriage to Petronella Barker. He reportedly walked out on his family when Abigail was a toddler. The father and daughter did have a brief reconciliation in the 1990s, with Hopkins arranging for Abigail to have cameos in two of his films, Shadowlands and The Remains of the Day, but they have since lost contact.
When Hopkins was told that his response to Abigail’s family status sounded cold, the actor replied, “Well, it is cold. Because life is cold.”
According to Abigail’s personal website, she has gone on to become a singersongwriter, actor, and acting coach. Her most recent film appearance was in the 2015 film Romeo Vs Juliet.
Hopkins also slammed Hollywood culture in the interview, saying that it was filled with “hypocrisy”.
He said, “Look at Hollywood, how insidious it is. Look how people feel entitled to this, that and the other, and they can only be surrounded by ‘yes’ people. There’s so much hypocrisy, and they know nothing.”
