Filmmaker Aanand L Rai’s Tanu Weds Manu (2011) and its sequel, Tanu Weds Manu: Returns (2015) not just made the audiences laugh but also let the cash registers ringing at the box-office. And for quite some time now, there have been speculations around whether the filmmaker is planning to make a third film in the franchise. Talking about his plans regarding the third part, Rai shares that he is interested in making the film, but that will only happen when he has a story that is “good enough”. Not divulging more, he adds that the star cast that includes actors R Madhavan, Kangana Ranaut and Jimmy Sheirgill, may still remain the same. “The moment I am sure that I am going to make everyone laugh more [than what we have already done in the past], I will make the [third] film. Right now, I’m [totally busy] with Zero [his upcoming film starring Shah Rukh Khan], so there is no story in my head. But once I am out of Zero, I can’t live without a story in my head, so, yes, I will work on something and I will have something coming soon. But then, I will take my own sweet time to direct it,” says the director, known for his films such as Thodi Life Thoda Magic (2008) and Raanjhanaa (2013).

Tanu Weds Manu like its sequel was a hit, and for that matter his latest production, Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi also had a successful first part. When asked Rai about how easy or difficult is it to live up to the expectation once again with the next instalment, he says, “Whether it is a sequel or an instalment, it is again a story, which is being narrated.”

He says, “You have a few characters, whom you know from before, but this time there is something new that is happening [to them]. So everything again boils down to the kind of story you are going to narrate… a newer story means a newer experience for the audience. In that case, a little more expectation from the audience is always better.”

The moment I am sure that I am going to make everyone laugh more [than what we have already done in the past], I will make the [third] film. AANAND L RAI FILMMAKER
