A film’s failure affects me too: Amit Trivedi

As the movie completes five years of its release today, actor Nimrat Kaur says everything changed with that one film

Music composer Amit Trivedi is riding high on the success of the music of Manmarziyan directed by Anurag Kashyap, but his music for movies such as Fanney Khan and Bhavesh Joshi Superhero went largely unnoticed mainly because of their underperformance at the box office.

While Amit says that the fate of a movie does not necessarily decide the fate of its music, he does admit that he gets affected when a film fails to perform at the box office. “A film’s failure does affect me, I won’t deny that. I do try to analyse and understand what went wrong, but, creativity cannot be explained. It either works or it doesn’t,” he says.

“I work towards the director’s brief and the script... I feel happy when both the music and the film work, when everything is appreciated in totality. There are times when music has worked and a film hasn’t, and vice versa. But the maximum happiness comes when everything works in totality,” he says.

Amit’s latest work, music for Manmarziyan, has done well with the masses, unlike Bombay Velvet (2015), which was the composer’s last project with Anurag Kashyap. At that time Amit had told us that he blamed the producers of that film for not promoting the music. However, Amit maintains that there is no love lost between the two, and adds that Anurag is one of the few filmmakers who trusts his music composers.

“When the relationship is full of faith and comfort, certainly you want to work with those people again. Trust should come naturally. I have a very special connection and bond with Anurag sir, which reflects in my collaborations with him. He shows complete faith and trust in me,” he says.

The composer adds, “Filmmakers do have to have a vision for the [movie’s] music and how the music will carry the film ahead. Having said that, yes, there are certain times when an opinion becomes interference. At such times, as composers, we have no choice but to follow the path chosen for us rather than us choosing our own path.”
