Being ‘single’ and an ‘actor’ made it tough for Elnaaz to get a house

It is quite known that getting a rented space in Mumbai, Maharashtra is quite a task if you are single and an actor. The latest one to face such a situation is Sacred Games actor Elnaaz Norouzi. The actor, who had been staying in Bandra for quite some now decided to move to Andheri as most of her work happens there. But when she tried to shift back to Bandra, getting a place on rent gave her nightmares.

“As a single woman, it’s already difficult to find a new apartment in Mumbai and there are a bunch of places you can’t even consider as they are not keen on having single women as tenants. Also, the fact that I am an expat narrows down the options further. And since I am an actor, people are scared that you may organise too many parties, and I guess many people have had bad experiences before (because of that). So, they are totally against (renting their place to) actors,” says Elnaaz Norouzi. She adds that it took her more than four months to finally find a place.

Elnaaz, however, shares that she was not unaware of the fact that it’s a common problem faced by actors. “I wonder why? We actors are as normal as the others. In fact, I host no parties at home, and I know many friends belonging other fields, who’d host house parties every weekend, so I guess it has nothing to do with being an actor,” she explains.

When asked if she thinks there is a solution to this problem, Elnaaz says, “It’s not like there aren’t any actors or singles abroad but there, it’s easy to find a place because there are rules and people follow them. I feel that’s what’s lacking here [in India] because people do not like to follow rules.”
