WOMEN SPEAKING AGAINST INJUSTICE IS POSITIVE: ASHA

Singer Asha Bhosle says that people who exploit women feel encouraged when women don’t open up about their issues

Veteran singer Asha Bhosle says that she is glad to see that women are coming out in open to talk about their issues and fight against injustice.

When asked about her take on current scenario where women are standing up against injustice, she says, “It’s a positive step and women should express their issues and should fight for justice otherwise people who are exploiting women will get encouragement. So, it’s really good that women are coming out in the open to talk about issues.”

She cited her own example for women who want to break societal norms. She said that she pursued her singing career while taking care of her family.

“Women are being exploited since many decades. Earlier, people used to have a perception that they should spend their entire life in kitchen and take care of their family and children. I think women should come out of that, the way I came out of it. I took care of my house, family and children, but at the same time, I pursued my singing career,” says the singer.

Bhonsle’s comments come in the light of the news which has been grabbing eyeballs recently — actor Tanushree Dutta has alleged that actor Nana Patekar had harassed her on sets of the movie Horn Ok Pleassss in 2008. Janice Sequeira, a journalist, backed her allegations, claiming to be an eyewitness of the incident. Tanushree also alleged that filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri had told her to strip and dance on the sets of the film Chocolate (2005).

Many Bollywood celebrities such as Farhan Akthar, Swara Bhasker, Sonam Kapoor, Twinkle Khanna and Priyanka Chopra came out to support Tanushree, who opened the floodgates against sexual harassment at the workplace by attempting to trigger a #MeToo movement in Bollywood.
