I won’t ever act in sex comedies: Taapsee
My basic criterion is that I should relate to [a genre] as a member of the audience. So when I don’t relate to it; I won’t do it. TAAPSEE PANNU ACTOR
Many actors have a set of dos and don’ts that they adhere to while signing a film. Though they’re only playing a fictitious character, some actors have a list of elements they refrain from portraying on screen or even a particular kind of cinema that they don’t endorse. Taapsee Pannu, known for her feisty characters in films such as Pink (2016) and Naam Shabana (2017), won’t do adult comedies.
She says, “The one genre I won’t be comfortable watching is the sex comedies; so, I won’t do it. Other than that, I don’t have restrictions as far as the roles are concerned. I’m not a viewer for that genre, be it Hollywood or Bollywood. My basic criterion is that I should relate to [a genre] as a member of the audience. So when I don’t relate to it; I won’t do it.”
About the importance of relating to a character, Taapsee adds, “When I hear a script, I hear it as an audience [member]. When the common man goes to a theatre, [he] has to connect with the protagonist of the film. If he or she doesn’t connect with the protagonist, you lose the audience. It can be in a funny film, where you relate with the humour of the protagonist; or it could be a serious subject, where you connect with what the character is going through.”
And in real life, does she have a dictum to live by? The Manmarziyaan actor says, “It’s not something passed on to me by anyone in particular. It’s something that I’ve found on my own in the past few years since I started working [in cinema]. I honestly believe that I will not just survive, but I will live it up. That’s one philosophy I live by.”
