Indian designers dress up samesex couples
In a welcome change, samesex weddings seem to have now gained acceptance among a lot of Indian communities abroad. These couples are getting their wedding finery designed by top names from the Indian fashion fraternity. And now with the fear of Section 377 gone, designers are happy to showcase their work. Recently, designer Tarun Tahiliani took to Instagram to share some pictures from a gay wedding in the US for which he had designed the clothes. This was the first time Tahiliani dressed up a gay couple. He wrote: “Who would have believed this 10 years back. We dressed Dr Amit Patel and his fiancé, Martin, for their wedding in New York. This is a monumental day for them and for all the celebration of the same sex union. On the heels of the abolition of Section 377, this is monumental for the entire community.” Designer Shantanu Mehra of the label Shantanu & Nikhil, who has also designed clothes for a couple of gay weddings in the past, including hotelier Keshav Suri’s wedding with his partner, Cyril Feuillebois, in Paris, says, “Our brand has always been inclusive and we take pride in designing wedding garments for same- sex couples. We have [done] gay weddings in the past and, of course, we’re seeing more such weddings taking place now.”
Designer duo Shyamal & Bhumika, too, has done four such cross-cultural same-sex weddings. Shyamal Shodhan says, “It has been very interesting to design outfits for gay weddings in San Franciso, New York, and London. We look forward to designing outfits for [more] gay weddings out there and in India.”
