Actor Kalki Koechlin says that there can be an online rating system, like in some foreign countries, to guide people on which show to watch

When the Bombay High Court recently issued a notice — over a plea to set up a pre-screening committee for all streaming content — to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, quite a few celebrities voiced their opinion against it. Now, actor Kalki Koechlin is the latest to join the league.

Kalki believes that an adult should be free to make his or her viewing choices. “I have always had my stand very clear: I don’t think censorship is the right way ahead. I don’t think that will help, anyway.

“Adults can make decisions for themselves. [Probably] an online rating system, like the one we have in a few foreign countries, is what we’re desperately in need of. That will help people understand more about the content,” says the actor, who will be seen next in the films Haathi Mere Saathi and Gully Boy.

Besides these ventures, she recently worked on a web show titled Smoke, which highlights a side of Goa that many aren’t aware of. Kalki says that she has never played such a character before. She explains, “[The web series] shows Goa from a different angle, and gives you a different perspective. [It highlights] the fact that Goa is more than just a holiday destination.”

The series has been received well, and Kalki is content with the reaction. What made her accept the show? The actor says that she liked “the rawness of the script”, and the newness of the character. “My character in it is interesting. I play this girl who comes from Portugal and goes on to become the mistress of this Russian don [in Goa]. She is trying to escape from the world,” she adds.
