How Ranbir found inspiration ‘again’
It has been a bumper year for Bollywood despite a few disappointments. But one film that more than lived up to everyone’s expectations has been Rajkumar Hirani’s Sanju, which continues to be the biggest money-spinner yet, this year. As per a latest trade report, the Ranbir Kapoorstarrer ranks fourth in the list of most profitable films of 2018.
Ranbir, on his part, says everything looked “great” right from the start. “In fact, after a long time, I found inspiration in a character and a film,” he says, adding, “I remember when I was offered the film, Raju sir messaged me saying that he is making a biopic on Sanju sir. At that time, I had many questions in my mind, like ‘will I be able to do it?’, ‘can I act like him’, ‘how will the film turn out to be’, and ‘would people find his life interesting enough?’”
Ranbir adds when he read the script, he “went crazy”. “I thought it was a once-in-alifetime opportunity to be part of such a film because after all, it’s Rajkumar Hirani, who is doing a biopic on an actor whom I admire a lot.”
According to Ranbir, the way Dutt has been portrayed in Sanju is “very different” from how he personally knows him, and people’s perception of the senior actor. “Everyone is aware of a very different life [of Dutt] and that’s why we felt that his life is worth telling on the big screen,” he adds.
Ranbir feels what helped him get a hold on the character was “complete belief” in him. “It was very important for me. Once I crossed that juncture, everything fell into place,” says the actor, who refuses to call it his own interpretation.
“We were careful, as we didn’t want the character to look like mimicry, as it’d have been jarring for the audience. Also, it’s a biopic on a relevant, real-life person who is still working in films and continues to be a star. It made things doubly hard. It’s not as if the film is about a sports star, a politician, or someone who is dead,” Ranbir adds.
