Rajkummar Rao is known for his versatility in films. However, it’s the past two years that have really seen his fame shoot up. Now, he feels more confident than ever about surprising his audiences with an action caper or a dance film. Excerpts:

You have set the bar really high for your contemporaries with your recent performances.

Honestly, I don’t believe in any kind of competition, especially in the art forms. I have a lot of gratitude that Stree has done phenomenally well. It’s one of the most successful films this year. I’m happy about it. Everyone is doing well. I’d say it’s just a great time for cinema.

So, you compete with yourself?

I just want to grow as an actor. I want people to say that I am someone who attempts different things. I don’t want to typecast myself. I learn with every new film, every director, and the team. Also, you are growing in life, so the maturity helps in your performances, too.

Not many know that you’ve learned Taekwondo. Wouldn’t you want to sign an action film?

In the action department, I’d love to work with director Sriram Raghavan (of films Badlapur and Andhadhun) If it’s an action-thriller with him, it will be fantastic. I am more of a Karate Kid guy, so it has to have a good story. It can’t be just about a boy beating 20 people. I’d love to work with Deepika (Padukone; actor). I hope she agrees to do an action film with me, because she does great action, too. And yes, I have done taekwondo for about nine years. Not to brag, but I am a gold medallist in it. I also love dancing and would love to do a dance film. I’ve not got many offers to do so.

So, is a film with Deepika happening anytime soon?

Let’s see. Nothing concrete yet, but there is a possibility. Hopefully, something might materialise next year.

You did Queen (2014) at a time when few male stars acted in a woman-oriented story. Would you sign one at this point?

Of course! Maybe even more. For me, it is the story that matters, not the gender of the lead character. If the story excites me, I’d jump at it. Nothing is bigger than content. I am glad it is getting its due respect.

I am more of a Karate Kid guy. It (an action film) has to have a good story. It can’t be about a boy beating 20 people. RAJKUMMAR RAO ACTOR
