If you are a TV buff, there’s no way you won’t remember Sweetie from the ’90s popular comedy, Hum Paanch. The fun and bubbly character played by Rakhi Vijan enjoyed a huge fan following.

Rakhi shares that Sweetie had become larger-than-life and no other character that she played after could live up to that stature, and no conversation with her about her career happens without a reference to Sweetie.

“Sweetie has been a landmark in my career,” says the actor, before adding, “It influenced the masses so much that none of the other characters that I played could break or overshadow that image.”

Hum Paanch, was an iconic show of its time. Going down the memory lane, Rakhi shares, “There are a lot of fond memories of Hum Paanch, as we were very young back then. The fun you watched on camera took place off camera, too. One thing that I still remember clearly is when (producer) Ekta Kapoor came to me and said, ‘Your character is very funny, why don’t you add one thing more, that is whenever you open the door sing a song’. I told her, ‘I don’t know how to sing and would make a fool out of myself’. But then, it worked so well. She was such a visionary at such a young age; the idea was a super-duper hit.”

Every time one mentions the role, Rakhi admits she becomes super nostalgic. The actor, who is currently a part of a comedy show, says, “Everything was like fun, back then. Today, everything is very well-managed, everything is done very technically. Earlier, look tests never happened. We just wore whatever was available on the set. It wasn’t as professional as it is today; everything was impromptu. Today, it’s very professional and organised.”
