JOHNNY DEPP LASHES OUT AT ‘CANCEL CULTURE’ IN FILM INDUSTRY
Taking centre stage at the San Sebastian International Film Festival, Spain, to receive a top award, actor Johnny Depp presented himself as a victim of the “cancel culture”, something he said has spread across the cinema industry.
Depp was on Wednesday addressing questions about the loss of Hollywood’s favour for new roles, ever since his ex-wife, actor
Amber Heard, went public with allegations of domestic violence against him.
“It’s a very complex situation, this cancel-culture, or this instant rush to judgment based on essentially what amounts to polluted air,” said the actor, 58.
Female filmmakers and other groups had criticised the organiser’s decision to confer Depp with the Donostia Award, arguing that it tarnished the event’s image and delivered the wrong message to victims of gender violence.
“What is the message that remains when men denounced for sexist violence are applauded, photographed on red carpets, surrounded by unconditional fans?” Spain’s Association of Female Filmmakers and Audiovisual Media, CIMA, wrote
Divas from the entertainment industry leave no stone unturned to make us stare at their photographs on social media. And we love it! Dia Mirza recently posted this picture of herself with the caption, “This kurta reminds me of #CleanAir and #BlueSkies.” We do like the colour and texture of Mirza’s khadi ‘burdwan’ set. Shweta Tiwari looks stunning in this beige outfit. The look has been tied together with that smoky eyes makeup. While actor Radhika Madan posted a happy picture in a printed little white dress, actor Ridhi Dogra shone with a close-up of her smiling face. on Twitter.
Last year, Depp lost a libel case against a British newspaper that accused him of domestic violence, with the judge on the case ruling that the allegations were “substantially correct.” In March, a court refused Depp permission to appeal the ruling that he assaulted his former wife, saying his attempt to overturn the decision had “no real prospect of success.”
