SOLAN/ PANCHRUKHI: Hitting the campaign trail in Himachal Pradesh where assembly elections are to be held on November 4, Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi on Thursday accused the BJP of acting against the interests of the common man across the country.

He said the BJP was blocking laws that would benefit the common man and was instead focusing on propaganda while the Congress put its own leaders and ministers facing corruption charges behind bars.

He lashed out at the BJP for opposing the proposed legislations on land acquisition and food safety, which are aimed at safeguarding the interests of the common man and the farming community.

“Every citizen has a legitimate right to actively participate in the nation’s progress but the BJP is only creating hurdles in all the public welfare proposals by the Congress,” he said at election meetings in Solan, Kangra and Kasauli.

“They want to stop us from coming to power again in 2014 because they know that if the UPA government makes the right to food and land laws, they can never win elections,” said Gandhi.

He said that along with implementing the world’s biggest employment generation scheme, MNREGA, the Congress had also brought foreign direct investment into multi-brand retail that would fetch better prices for farmers.

Turning to Himachal, Gandhi appealed to voters to ensure the victory of the Congress for speedy development of the state
