One held for trying to rape minor in Latehar district

LATEHAR: Two miscreants tried to sexually assault a 15-yearold girl in Tasu village under the Herhanj police station of Latehar district. However, villagers foiled the attempt and caught one of the two accused when the victim raised an alarm.

The incident occurred early on Monday when the girl was picking Mahua (a flower, commonly used to make countrymad­e liquor) alone and her f ather had gone t o attend nature’s call nearby.

The villagers caught Md Azad, one of the two accused as he was trying to flee from the scene after the girl raised an alarm. His accomplice Anil Bhuian, however, managed to flee.

The locals thrashed Md Ajaz before handing him over to the police. The Herhanj police later sent Azad to Latehar jail.

The police said, “The accused belonged to Dihi village in Latehar police station area and had reached the place of crime on a two-wheeler.”

The victim infor med the police that the duo attempted to rape her when she had gone to pick Mahua, just 500 metres away from her home around 3.30 am on Monday. “The accused tried to rape me when my father had gone to attend nature’s call,” she told the police.

The police were conducting raids in the area to nab the other accused.

65-YEAR-OLD WOMAN RAPED, ACCUSED HELD RANCHI: Police arrested a 20-yearold youth on Monday for allegedly raping a 65-year-old woman on April 11. The victim, who is a resident of Karkatta-Raja Ulahatu village, in her FIR at Namkom police station alleged that the accused Santu Tirkey raped her when she was alone at home.

Police station- i n- charge Tapan Mahatha said Tirkey was the victim’s neighbour and he was in an inebriated state during the incident. The victim has been sent to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) for medical examinatio­n, Mahatha said.

According to the victim’s family members, Tirkey went to her house and demanded money. When she refused to give him money, he thrashed the woman and raped her.

Mahatha said, “The victim was scared to come forward and report the case.” Mahatha said the victim’s family members revealed the matter after she agreed to lodge an FIR.
