RANCHI: Lessons on moral values, general knowledge and personality development will soon be included in the school curriculum of Jharkhand, officials said on Sunday.

“We have started training teachers to hold moral science and GK classes in schools. Government schools will have to mandatorily hold morning assemblies every day,” said school education and literacy secretary Aradhna Patnaik.

Many teenagers get influenced by left-wing extremist groups. Girls get lured by false promises of human traffickers and quit studies for job opportunities in metros. While classes on moral values are expected to help children differentiate between right and wrong, general knowledge lessons will make them aware of current happenings and instil an urge to do something for the country, officials said.

GK and moral science classes will be held on Saturdays in all 45,680 government schools, Patnaik said. A 15-minute assembly will include a prayer, thought of the day, news updates, singing the national anthem and reading

out the Constitution’s preamble.

“The additions to the curriculum have been planned primarily for students of Class 3 to 8, but will be followed in all the classes. An annual calendar for all the schools has also been prepared,” she said.

“GK lessons will be divided in three subheads of state, country and world, so that children develop an understanding of happenings around the globe.”

Personality development classes will also be held on Saturdays to help students shed fears and speak up. Students are often reluctant to speak in front of strangers. This is one reason why they fail to answer questions asked by officials during inspections, claim teachers.

“The personality development sessions will instil confidence in them to speak up in front of strangers. We will also hold elocution and extempore events to end their stage fear and reluctance to speak,” said Patnaik.
