RANCHI: More than one lakh people living in parts of Ranchi will get respite from water rationing from Monday with more supply through an alternative pipeline but rationing will continue in Dhurwa, Hatia and Hinoo areas.

“We have connected Rukka water treatment plant to Hatia pipeline for supplying additional water to the areas facing water rationing. The supply will begin from Monday evening,” state drinking water and sanitation minister Chandra Prakash Chaudhary said on Sunday.

Residents of Dhurwa, Doranda, Hinoo, Hatia, Ashok Nagar and Harmu get water thrice a week (Sunday, Wednesday and Friday) after supply from Hatia dam – where water level dipped 10 ft lower than last year – was rationed from October 26.

Around 45 million gallon per day (MGD) is pumped from three dams – Rukka (30 MGD), Hatia (10 MGD), and Kanke (4.5 MGD) – for supply to Ranchi. Water level in Rukka and Kanke is better than that of Hatia dam.

Around five million gallon per day additional water will be supplied from Rukka dam to areas like Kant a Toli, Siram Toli, Church Road, Doranda, North Office Para, Ashok Nagar, Mecon, Har mu, Kusai Colony and Arobindo Nagar.

A DWS official said water rationing would continue in Hinoo, HEC, Singh More, Birsa Chowk, parts of Doranda and Hatia. The supply could be increased from three days a week to four days.

“With additional supply from Rukk adam, water demand will reduce. Therefore, we can increase the supply from thrice a week to four days a week,” said KK Verma, Hatia dam executive engineer.

With water level in Hatia dam going down, the state government had planned for a chemical technology to control evaporation by 20% to 30%.

The Drinking Water and Sanitation (DWS) department had floated tenders twice inviting private parties for the technology. As the department did not find a bidder, the idea was put on hold.
