DHANBAD: The police on Sunday arrested a shopkeeper for allegedly raping an 11-year-old girl in Dhanbad.

On Thursday, the victim, a resident of Baludih area, had gone to purchase goods at a neighbourhood shop run by Parveen Singh, when he allegedly dragged her inside and raped her, the police said.

“Parveen raped my daughter on Thursday afternoon, when she had gone to purchase sugar at his shop,” the victim’s mother said.

The girl revealed the incident to her parents. “The accused had threatened her with dire consequences if she were to open her mouth, which is why she was silent even after the incident,” the mother said.

After the family lodged a complaint, the police immediately swung into action, nabbing the accused from his house.

“On the basis of a written complaint filed by the victim’s parents, the police arrested the accused from his house,” said Ram Chandra Tiwari, officer incharge, Munidih police station. He said Singh has been booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.

The officer also said that the girl has been sent to Patliputra Medical College and Hospital for a medical examination while the accused has been sent to judicial custody.
