Woman dies after vehicle hit her during stone pelting

SRINAGAR: A 22-year-old woman died and a 19-year-old sustained injuries after an SUV hit them in city outskirts on Tuesday. Police said the driver’s vehicle was being stoned by miscreants and he ran over the women, who were on a morning walk, while moving his vehicle backwards.

SRINAGAR: A 22-year-old woman died and a 19-year-old girl sustained injuries when a Scorpio vehicle — which was being pelted with stones — hit them on the outskirts of Srinagar on Tuesday.The driver of the vehicle took the victims to a hospital but then fled the scene.

Police said the vehicle hit the two women after the driver moved it backwards as it was being pelted with stones in Parimpora area.

The two women — Fozia, 22, and Nadia, 19, — were on a morning walk near their homes.

Police said Fozia succumbed to her injuries while Nadia is being treated at the SMHS hospital. The hospital’s medical superintendent Nazir Chowdhary said that the injured girl was admitted in the neurosurgery department. “She has a head injury,” he said.

Superintendent of Police (west city) Ambarkar Shriram Dinkar said that they have resgistered an FIR and launched a hunt to track down the vehicle.

“We heard that the driver took the girls to the hospital. We are trying to identify the vehicle using CCTV footage and by also talking to the locals,” he said.

He said police were also investigation the stone-pelting incident. “Reportedly, a group of youth, early in the morning, resorted to stone-pelting during which the accident took place,” Dinkar said.

A police spokesman said that in another incident, a resident of Zoonimar area, named Furqan Hamid, was injured when miscreants pelted stones at him while he was riding a scooty near Allie Masjid Eidgah in Safa Kadal area in the old city.
