12 TORTOISES BEING SMUGGLED TO WB RECOVERED

DHANBAD: The Government Railway Police (GRP) on Wednesday recovered 12 tortoises of a rare species from the Chambal Express. The tortoises were being smuggled from Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh to West Bengal. The tortoises were kept in an abandoned bag inside the berth of a sleeper class compartmen­t on the train. “Some passengers noticed an abandoned bag inside a berth and reported the matter to GRP. Taking note of it, the GRP personnel searched the train at Dhanbad railway station and recovered the bag with 12 tortoises,” GRP officer-in-charge Shashi Bhushan Singh said. “The tortoises were handed over to the forest department.”
