Snow becomes a canvass in Valley

- Ashiq Hussain letters@hindustantimes.com

SRINAGAR: This winter, traditional snowmen are passé for Kashmiris who have turned their snow-covered courtyards and gardens into a canvas of sorts. And the result is no less than art.

Kashmir witnessed two days of heavy snowfall after a dry spell, providing its people with an outlet for their artistic skills. Snow sculptures of animals, Kashmiris and political leaders dot the landscape in the Valley. Some gave vent to their political ideology by making snowmen marked with pellets. Slogans of ‘Azadi’ also found their way to the snow-covered windscreens .

Pictures shared on social media show peoples’ efforts to celebrate the snowfall, even as life was thrown out of gear because of blocked roads, power outages and waterlogging.

“This year, everybody was desperate for snowfall. There was no snow last year and even this year, we had a long dry spell d. That is why people came out to celebrate the occasion,” said Shabir Ahmad, an orchardist from Anantnag district.

Commenting on the art, prominent poet and satirist Zarief Ahmad Zarief said the Azadi and pellet-marked snowmen reflected the minds of the youth.
