5 fresh Covid deaths push state’s toll to 78

478 cases take state tally to 10,683

PATNA: Five more Covid-19 deaths reported on Thursday pushed Bihar’s toll to 78, even as the number of positive cases rose to 10,683, with addition of 478 cases on the day.

A RJD legislator also tested Covid-19 positive after he voluntaril­y took the test.

Meanwhile, seeing the pandemic situation, the Bihar government again cancelled all the leaves, excluding study and maternity, of all medical officers and other staff and nurses till August 30. This is the third time the government has cancelled leaves of the medical staff.

In another developmen­t, the health department decided to close RMRI, Patna, one of the leading centres for Covid-19 test, for two days from Friday after two technician­s and equal number of canteen staff tested Covid positive. In Patna, a record 125 cases were found.

Kumar Singh in his media briefing said the five deaths of Covid-19 patients were reported from Bhojpur, Kishanganj, Muzaffarpu­r, Patna and Rohtas districts.

Giving details of the two deaths, Dr Mukul Kumar Singh, nodal officer, Covid-19, NMCH, said two Covid-19 patients, including a 66-year-old man of Masaurhi in Patna district and another 75-year-old man of Bhojpur, passed away on Thursday.

“The Masaurhi and Bhojpur patients had tested positive on June 27 and June 29 respective­ly,” he said.

The health secretary said all the patients who died in last 24 hours besides having Covid-19 were patients of other serious diseases.

He said the recovery rate in Bihar stood at 76.92%, as 7,994 patients had recovered till now.

“In the last 24 hours, 183 patients had recovered while in the same period 317 new cases had come and 7,291 tests conducted,” he said, adding till now 2,35,980 tests for Covid-19 had been conducted. Singh said there were 2,319 active patients in the state .

The first official tweet of health department while giving break-up of 188 cases said 64 cases were found in Patna, 39 in Muzaffarpu­r, Aurangabad 17, Nawada 13, West Champaran 11, 7 each in Bhagalpur, Madhubani and Nalanda, Rohtas 4, 3 each in Arwal, Gopalganj and Sheikhpura, 2 each in Gaya and Supaul, 1 each Bhojpur, Kaimur, Kishanganj, Madhepura, Munger and Supaul.

However, the second tweet added another 290 cases taking the cumulative count of patients to 10,683.
