Toll at 19 after highest number of deaths in a day

RANCHI: Jharkhand registered its highest casualties in a single day as four people died due to Coronaviru­s infection on Saturday, taking the state’s Covid toll to 19, officials said.

The four deaths were recorded from East Singhbhum, Khunti and Sahebgunj. Two Covid patients from Khunti and Sahibganj were undergoing treatment at state’s premier hospital , Rajendra Institute of Medical Science (RIMS), Ranchi.

RIMS’ ICU (Covid) head, Pradip Bhattachar­ya said a 55-year-old man from Khunti and 66-year-old woman from Sahebgunj died on Saturday. “They were suffering from multiple diseases. The 55-year-old man, who was admitted to RIMS general medicine ward on June 19, was suffering from chronic obstructiv­e pulmonary disease and multiple-organ dysfunctio­ns,” he said.

He said the 66-year-old woman, who was brought to RIMS from a private hospital after detection of Covid-19, was suffering from multiple diseases. “She was already on ventilator. She was suffering from chronic kidney disease, diabetes, hyper tension and others,” Bhattachar­ya said.

A 71-year-old man from Sonari died in Tata Main Hospital on Saturday. East Singhbhum deputy commission­er (DC) Ravishanka­r Shukla said, “The elderly man was suffering from several ailments and was undergoing treatment after testing positive in TMH,” the DC said.

An 88-year-old woman also died at TMH on Saturday. She woman was admitted to TMH on June 21 with chest infection, breathing problem and known history of cardiac diseases.

“She had earlier tested negative but tested positive for Covid after death,” the TMH bulletin confirmed. The state health bulletin , however, did not record this death till Saturday evening.

Meanwhile, Jharkhand on Saturday registered 36 new cases from 11 districts, which took the state’s tally to 2,739, officials said.

Of the total, 686 are active positive cases, while 2,035 people have already been discharged from the hospitals, according to state Covid-19 bulletin released on Saturday evening. As many as 33 people recovered on Saturday.

East Singhbhum recorded the maximum 13 cases on Saturday. A total of six persons were found positive in Ranchi, while four in Dhanbad and three in Palamu.

Deoghar, Hazaribag and Saraikela recorded two cases each, while one case each was registered in Bokaro, Giridih, Lohardaga and Pakur.
