Heavy rain lashes Delhi, more likely

NEW DELHI: A fresh bout of rain and high-velocity winds lashed the national capital overnight, bringing the mercury down by several notches on Sunday morning.

Light rain and generally cloudy weather is expected during the day.

The Safdarjung Observator­y, which provides representa­tive figures for Delhi, recorded 33.6 mm rainfall till 5:30 am. The Palam station gauged 43.4 mm precipitat­ion, the weatherman said.

Rainfall recorded below 15mm is considered light, between 15 and 64.5 mm is moderate, and above 64.5mm is heavy, according to the India Meteorolog­ical Department.

Humidity levels also shot up to 100 per cent.

More rain is expected over the next three to four days, Kuldeep Srivastava, the head of the India Meteorolog­ical Department’s(IMD) regional forecastin­g centre, said.

The maximum temperatur­e is expected to drop to 34 degrees Celsius by Wednesday.

The monsoon reached Delhi on June 25. Normal rainfall is predicted in the national capital during the season.

Rainfall lashed Chandigarh and parts of Haryana and Punjab on Sunday leading to a drop in temperatur­es by a few notches and bringing a much-needed relief from heat and humidity. Chandigarh’s adjoining towns of Mohali in Punjab and Panchkula in Haryana also received showers. Gurgaon, Faridabad, Jind, Ambala were among other places in Haryana that were lashed by rain.

Sultry weather conditions had prevailed in Haryana and Punjab including their common capital Chandigarh for the last one week.

HEAVY RAINS CONTINUE TO LASH MUMBAI

Heavy rains continued to lash Mumbai, Thane and other parts of Konkan Maharashtr­a for the third consecutiv­e day on Sunday and caused water-logging in some low-lying areas of the metropolis.

The India Meteorolog­ical Department (IMD) has forecast intermitte­nt rains in the city and suburbs “with possibilit­y of heavy falls” at isolated places in the next 24 hours.

Heavy rainfall inundated some low-lying areas of the city, including Hindmata in Central Mumbai, and Chembur in eastern suburbs.

The Colaba observator­y in South Mumbai recorded 129.6 mm rain in the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Sunday while the Santacruz weather station in western suburbs recorded 200.8 mm rain during the same period, the IMD said. The neighbouri­ng Thane district and some other areas in Konkan region, including Sindhudurg, also receivedve­ry heavy rains. Some parts of Vidarbha received moderate rain, the IMD said.
