JAMSHEDPUR: Tata Main Hospital (TMH) confirmed 282 Covid-19 deaths in the hospital till Saturday amid a series of probes by the Central and the state government’s teams on the high mortality rate in the hospital.

The silver lining, however, was the fact that 927 Covid-19 patients of 60 years of age have recovered, with 43 of them aged 80 years and above, TMH officials said late on Saturday evening.

“The total number of Covid-19 related deaths in TMH was 282 till Saturday, while 2,543 patients were cured out of 3,135 Covid-19 patients admitted till date. This puts our mortality rate at 6.09%,” Dr Rajan Choudhry, Tata Steel medical services special advisor, said.

As per the Jamshedpur Covid-19 bulletin, till Saturday, 927 patients in the age group of 60 years and above were cured in the district. Of them, 579 were male, while 248 were female Covid-19 patients. Jamshedpur had reported 285 Covid-19 deaths till late Saturday night.

“The recovery rate has also risen to 81.12%, while the admission rate is going down. This week, there were 243 admissions against 268 last week,” said Dr Choudhary.

He also cautioned citizens of Jamshedpur not to be complacent even if the numbers continue to come down in the next few weeks. “Corona strikes in waves. We are at the peak of Covid-19 phase one. Even if the numbers come down, we should continue to take precautions. We should also be ready for the second wave.”

“The virus hits and undergoes some mutation. Some precautions are taken. After that, the number of deaths and cases go down. Then, after a break of one, three or six months, the virus mutates and strikes again. Most of the pandemics follow this pattern. Therefore, we have to keep ourselves ready for a long battle. There has been no case of reinfection yet in TMH,” Dr Choudhary said.
