Guv summons DGP after minor’s gang rape in Ranchi
RANCHI: Jharkhand Governor Draupadi Murmu on Sunday took cognizance of an alleged gang rape of a minor girl that reportedly took place at police guest house near old police line under Lower Bazar police station in Ranchi on August 12.
The Governor summoned child welfare committee (CWC) chairperson Rupa Verma to get information about the incident, along with director general of police (DGP) MV Rao and asked him to take immediate action in the case and arrest the culprits.
The Governor described the incident as a matter of shame to the society. She said she would ask for immediate action against the culprits after taking full information about the case.
Detailing on the incident, the CWC chairperson said a minor girl was kidnapped and gang raped at a police guest house on August 12. “Police found the girl on August 14 in Daltonganj and her statement was recorded by the CWC, Ranchi on August 18. However, police lodged an FIR under Section 366 (Kidnapping). As per the minor’s statement before the
CWC, this is a case of 376 D. Besides, the main accused has still not been arrested in the case,” Verma said.
Officer in-charge of Lower Bazar police station Satish Kumar said, “A kidnapping case was lodged by the girl’s parents on August 13. Later, when the girl’s statement was recorded, it was also found it was also a rape case. As per the process, we requested the court to add concerned sections to the case and it has been done.”
He said two persons, who were allegedly Facebook friends of the minor girl, have also been arrested and sent to jail. “The identity of the third person, whom the girl recognized as Sharma ji, is being established. He had told the girl that he works in police control room,” he said.
Police said that as per the minor girl, she was called by one of her Facebook friends, identified as Karan, on August 12, and she was handed over to her another Facebook friend Vipul, who is allegedly a relative of a police personnel at the police guest house, where Sharma was already there.
Sharma had sent Vipul to bring some food from outside, after which he raped her, the minor said. When Vipul came, Sharma left the room and Vipul raped her, she said. Her alleged Facebook friends hired a cab and sent her to Palamu with Karan, who also reportedly raped her.
Police found the girl in Palamu on August 14 and sent her to CWC on August 18.
