Two men duped of ₹9L in Jamshedpur

-

JAMSHEDPUR: Cyber fraudsters siphoned off ₹4.41 lakh and ₹4.70 lakh from two bank accounts in lieu of falsely updating know your customer (KYC) details and making another man call a fake customer care number after a failed ATM transaction, Jamshedpur police said on Monday.

“Cyber fraudsters withdrew ₹3.45 lakh and ₹96, 000 from the accounts of one Ashish Kumar, a resident of Aastha Space Town on Dimna Road, in State Bank of India (SBI) G-Town branch on Sunday by making him download a quick access mobile application. Fraudsters allegedly withdrew ₹4.70 lakh from Punjab National Bank (PNB) accounts of one Shashi Shekhar Mishra from Dimna Road Mango by making him call a fake customer number of PNB on Saturday. We are investigating the cases,” Uonedra Kumar Mandal, Jamshedpur cyber police station officer in-charge (OC), said.

“We have been continuously warning people that no bank or online shopping company has a mobile number as their customer care number. They always have numbers starting with 1800 or landline numbers. In both the above cases, the fraudsters called Ashisih and Shashi from unknown mobile numbers,” said Mandal.

As per complaints lodged, Ashish got a message on his mobile, asking him to call on a number to verify his identity proof or else his mobile will be deactivated. “I was asked to download Airtel application and had no suspicion. But during the verification process, the caller got a quick access application downloaded on my mobile and then asked me to make a transaction of ₹10 for mobile number verification. When I checked my accounts, I found ₹3.45 lakh and ₹96,000 were withdrawn,” Ashish stated in his complaint.

On the other hand, Shashi had tried to withdraw ₹10,000 from PNB ATM at Mango branch of the bank Saturday, when ₹10,000 was shown to have been deducted from his account, though he didn’t receive any cash.

“When I complained to bank authorities, they asked me to call on customer care number. When I called on a number, I was told that a link was being sent to my phone and money will be refunded after furnishing the details asked. I gave my bank account details and ₹4.70 lakh was withdrawn,” Shashi complained.
