PATNA: Two labourers from Jharkhand died and one is reported to be critically ill after allegedly consuming spurious liquor at Majhwalia village in Gopalganj district on Wednesday.

The incident took place on Tuesday evening at a brick kiln falling under Vijaypur police station. Gopalganj administration, however, said that the cause of death will be confirmed only after postmortem report.

The deceased have been identified as Budhwa Panna (45) and Karma Panna (50), both residents of Gumla district.

Sources said over six labourers had consumed the liquor, following which the condition of three deteriorated and they were rushed to Bhore hospital, where doctor referred them to Sadar hospital. Doctors declared two labourers dead on arrival at Sadar hospital.

On getting information, police reached the hospital and collected details from the victim’s kin. District magistrate (DM) Dr Nawal Kishor Choudhary and SP Sunil Kumar visited the brick kiln and carried out a search on the premises. The DM said a medical board has been constituted for their post-mortem.

A joint team of excise officials and district police carried out searches around five-km radius of brick kiln, but nothing was found.

“Preliminary investigation suggested that one of the victims was suffering from lungs infection while another was complaining of stomach pain,” said the DM adding that the exact cause of the deaths will be known once we receive the autopsy report.

Earlier on February 5, three people — Lal Mohar Bind, Ram Keshi Kohar and Chandrika Paswan — died and five fell ill after consuming spurious liquor at Kurasan village under Bhabua police station of Kaimur district.
