LATEHAR: The ruling party Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) on Thursday demanded a 1,000-bed Covid-19 hospital with ventilators and oxygen supply in Palamu. They suggested that the newly built sprawling campus of engineering college be used for the purpose.

They also demanded that an oxygen generation plant should be installed on the campus. Addressing a press briefing at Daltonganj on Thursday, Palamu district unit JMM chief Rajendra Kumar Sinha said, “The system has collapsed in Palamu and the pandemic is beyond control. In this situation, immediate intervention by the government and all stake holders is urgently required. We support demand for oxygen plant in Palamu.”

“A new 1,000-bed Covid facility should be set up at engineering college campus. The oxygen plant should also be set up there and the Sadar Hospital should be left for common patients,” Sinha said, while demanding oxygen supply for Covid patients who were in home isolation.

The alarming spike in the cases in recent days has exposed the vulnerable health infrastructure in Palamu district, as people were seen running for oxygen cylinders and highly sought medicines such as Remdesivir.

There were more than 1,400 active cases in the district as on Thursday, according to the district health bulletin.
