DEHRADUN: Uttarakhand Congress on Thursday held a sit-in at its party state headquarters in Dehradun against the BJP-led state government, alleging crumbling health facilities in the state amid Covid second wave.

The sit-in was led by the party state president Pritam Singh and Dehradun city unit president Lal Chand Sharma. During the protest, they attacked the government of “doing nothing” to tackle the worsening pandemic situation. Singh said, “All the hospitals in the state are in a very bad shape and reeling under the pressure of this second wave. However, it seems the government is not at all interested in improving its facilities.”

“The people of this state gave a thumping majority to the BJP in 2017, but their government have now betrayed them in this dire situation. The recent five deaths in a hospital due to lack of oxygen has totally exposed the government,” he said.

Dehradun unit president Sharma, too, attacked the government saying, “The fund received for the Dehradun smart-city project should be diverted to improve the health facilities in the capital.”

Uttarakhand BJP president Madan Kaushik however, accused Congress of doing politics on the pandemic situation in the state calling it “unwarranted.” “Our government is taking various steps to fight this pandemic, including boosting health infrastructure. Few days back, chief minister Tirath Singh Rawat had called an all party meeting on Covid-19 during which the Congress leaders gave many positive suggestions. The CM welcomed those suggestions and assured action on them,” said Kaushik.

“However, after that, the Opposition leaders started criticising the government when it calls for all of us to be united to defeat this challenge before humanity. It is highly condemnable that in a dire situation like this, the Opposition is not leaving its politics behind,” he said.
