PM SPEAKS TO CMS OF FOUR STATES AMID COVID SPIKE

Modi spoke with chief ministers of Punjab, Karnataka, Bihar, and Uttarakhan­d on Sunday even as cases across the country continued to surge

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday spoke with chief ministers of Punjab, Karnataka, Bihar, and Uttarakhan­d to assess the situation arising out of the relentless surge in coronaviru­s disease (Covid-19) cases across the four states.

Modi has been speaking to state chief ministers and lieutenant governors of union territorie­s for the last few days to assess the pandemic situation there and offer suggestion­s. Chief ministers have also briefed him on the measures being taken by them to deal with the raging second wave of the pandemic.

Modi has assured the state government­s of all possible help to combat the surge in Covid-19 case.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi called up for an update on Covid cases in Uttarakhan­d. I apprised him with the present situation,” Uttarakhan­d chief minister Tirath Singh Rawat said in a tweet after his conversati­on with the PM.

Over the past few days, the Prime Minister has spoken with Maharashtr­a CM Uddhav Thackeray, newly elected Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin, and Shivraj Singh Chouhan of Madhya Pradesh.

The Covid-19 situation continues to be grim in Uttarakhan­d with around 7,000 to 9,000 people testing positive daily for the disease for the last several days.

NEW DELHI: Amid a surge in COVID-19 cases across the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday spoke with Chief Ministers of Punjab, Karnataka, Bihar, and Uttarakhan­d over the situation, sources said.

Over the past few days, the Prime Minister has been holding telephonic conversati­ons with Chief Ministers of various states, including Uddhav Thackeray of

Maharashtr­a, M K Stalin of Tamil Nadu, and Shivraj Singh Chouhan of Madhya Pradesh.

Earlier, Madhya Pradesh CM had informed that he had apprised Narendra Modi of the current COVID situation in the state. He also highlighte­d the status of oxygen, oxygen plants, Remdesivir injections, isolation centres, COVID care centres, temporary COVID hospitals, and public awareness campaigns.

The Prime Minister in conversati­on with Maharashtr­a chief minister had enquired about the COVID-19 related situation and praised the state for its efforts in combating the virus.

Earlier, PM Modi has also spoken with Manipur, Sikkim, Tripura, Telangana, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh CMs on the issue. he also spoke to Lieutenant Governors of Puducherry and Jammu and Kashmir to get a detailed picture of the outbreak

across the country.

Soon after a conversati­on with PM Modi, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, however, claimed that the PM only did his “Mann ki Baat” instead of “listening to and spoken on important matters”.

Meanwhile, Maharashtr­a, Karnataka and Delhi are among 10 states that account for 71.75 per cent of the 4,03,738 new COVID-19 cases registered in a day, the Union Health Ministry said on Sunday.

The other states in the list of 10 are Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Rajasthan, and Haryana.

Maharashtr­a has reported the highest daily new cases at 56,578. It is followed by Karnataka with 47,563 while Kerala reported 41,971 new cases A total of more than 30.22 crore tests have been conducted so far across the country while the daily COVID-19 positivity rate stands at 21.64 per cent, the ministry said.

India’s total active caseload has reached 37,36,648 and now comprises 16.76 per cent of the country’s total infections. A net increase of 13,202 cases has been recorded in the total active caseload in a span of 24 hours.

Maharashtr­a, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat,

Tamil Nadu, Chhattisga­rh, West Bengal, Haryana, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh cumulative­ly account for 82.94 per cent of India’s total active cases, the ministry stated. “The National Mortality Rate has been falling and currently stands at 1.09 per cent,” the ministry said. Besides, 4,092 deaths were reported in a span of 24 hours.

Ten states account for 74.93 per cent of the new deaths. Maharashtr­a saw the maximum casualties (864). Karnataka follows with 482 daily deaths.

Twenty states and UTs have deaths per million population lower than the national average (176), while 16 states and UTs have deaths per million population higher than the national average, the ministry highlighte­d. India’s cumulative recoveries have surged to 1,83,17,404 with 3,86,444 recoveries being registered in a span of 24 hours. Ten states account for 75.75 per cent of the new recoveries.

The ministry said the cumulative number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administer­ed in the country has exceeded 16.94 crore.

Maharashtr­a, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Karmataka, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, Bihar and Andhra Pradesh account for 66.78 per cent of the cumulative doses given so far in the country, the ministry said. Cumulative­ly 17,84,869 beneficiar­ies in the age group of 18-44 years have received their first dose of COVID vaccine.

More than 20 lakh vaccinatio­n doses were administer­ed in the last 24 hours. As on Day-113 of the drive (May 8), 20,23,532 vaccine doses were given. Across 16,722 sessions, 8,37,695 beneficiar­ies were vaccinated for first dose and 11,85,837 beneficiar­ies received their second dose.
