The Sahibganj police on Sunday arrested one Shiv Kumar Kanojia on charges of “emotional harassment” in the alleged suicide case of police official Rupa Tirkey, while they claimed to have found no evidence against involvement of three persons named by her family members in the case, officials said.

Kanojia was Tirkey’s batch mate. “On the basis of investigation carried out by the five-member special investigation team, Kanojia was prima facie found

responsible for Tirkey’s death. No evidence against the three persons named by her family has been found till now,” said Sahibganj superintendent of police Anurajan Kispotta.

Tirkey (26), who was officer in-charge of Sahibganj women’s police station, was found hanging inside her official quarters in the district last Monday. Following

this, her family lodged a complaint, suspecting involvement of three named persons-Manisha Kumari, Jyotsna Kumari and JMM leader Pankaj Mishra--in her death.

According to the report provided by a three-member medical team, the cause of death was stated to be “asphyxia due to hanging”, that establishes that

Tirkey’s death was a case of suicide and not murder, said the SP.

“Personal reasons have been found as cause of death,” he said, adding that a case has been registered against Kanojia at Borio police station and further investigation was on. The BJP and a section of leaders in the ruling JMM have been demanding CBI inquiry into the case.
