Jamshedpur reports six more Covid-19 deaths

JAMSHEDPUR: Jamshedpur city is gearing up to tackle the imminent third wave of Covid-19 pandemic, as six more deaths took the toll in East Singhbhum district to 884 on Thursday.

“We are trying to set up a 100bed ICU in Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College and Hospital (MGMMCH) and add another 300 oxygen beds in the district by end of this month in view of emergency needs. The hospital will be run by agency and number of beds will be increased as per their recommenda­tion,” Suraj Kumar, Jamshedpur DC, said.

He said process was on to set up 94 oxygen beds at Ramghariya Bhawan and Tata Training Centre by May 20. “Oxygen could be supplied to these facilities through pipelines due to their proximity to Linde India Oxygen plant. We will add another 200 oxygen beds in the old building of Kerala Samajam Model School and Graduate College by end of this month or early next month,” added Kumar.

The district administra­tion has come out with open tenders for running 100 ICU bed and 100 oxygen bed hospitals, but no private agency has applied for the same as yet. The administra­tion has promised to provide space, licence, equipment, doctors and health workers for these facilities.

Nine fresh Covid-19 deaths were reported from Tata Main Hospital (TMH) by 6 pm on Thursday, of which six were from Jamshedpur and three from neighbouri­ng SeraikelaK­harsawan district. This took the Covid-19 death toll in Jamshedpur to 884 by Thursday evening.

Meanwhile, the state health department has initiated the process for recruiting 17 junior doctors under residency scheme in MGMMCH, given the acute shortage of doctors and many falling prey to Covid-19.

The government advertisem­ent has called upon willing aspirants to apply to MGMMCH superinten­dent by May 25. Scrutiny of such applicatio­ns and certificat­es will be done on May 27 and counseling of the selected candidates will be done on May 28. They will be appointed in vacant posts in different department­s in MGMMCH.
