BHARATPUR: Three policemen, including a station house officer (SHO) of Sawai Madhopur district were suspended and 30 were sent to the police lines on Sunday after a 55-year-old person allegedly died in police custody on Saturday.

Sawai Madhopur superintendent of police (SP) Sudhir Choudhary said the action against the staff of Chauth ka Barwara police station was taken as per the guidelines of the National Human Right Commission (NHRC). “The SHO of the police station, one head constable and a constable were suspended and the rest of the staff posted there was sent to the line. We took this action for a free and fair investigation,” Choudhary told HT.

On Saturday, the Chauth ka Barwara police station received information that a property feud had taken violent turn in Ekda village, following which a police team was dispatched to the scene. There were stones and bricks strewn everywhere, which indicated that some kind of clash was taken place, Choudhary said, adding that the police detained Bhajan Lal Meena. “He already had some injuries even before the police had picked him. He was brought to the station, but technically he was still not placed under arrest,” Choudhary said.

He said Meena fell unconscious on a bench at the police station, following which he was taken to a nearby hospital. A CT scan was conducted, which hinted at injuries on the temporal lobe. The doctors at Sawai Madhopur referred him to Jaipur for treatment, but he died en route, the SP added.

Police said that a property feud was raging between Meean and his brother Ram Kishan Meena for the past few days.

On Friday, the police had picked up Ram Kishan, when the two families clashed and pelted stones at each other. Ram Kishan was later released. A fresh clash took place on Saturday, following which the police detained Bhajan Lal. The police claimed that they have a video of the clash.

BJP leader Jitendra Gothwal demanded ₹25 lakh as compensation to the kin of for the victim and action against cops.
