One killed over water dispute in Garhwa district

RANCHI: A sexagenari­an was killed allegedly by his relatives following a dispute over water on Tuesday evening at Garbandh village under Nagar Untari police station in Garhwa district, police said on Wednesday, adding that atleast 10 others were injured in the fight.

The deceased was identified as Mahavir Oraon.

A video of the incident went viral on social media on Wednesday, in which Mahavir was seen being thrashed brutally with a spade and bricks by few men. “The incident happened on Tuesday evening at the village around 20km from Nagar Untari police station. The man who can be seen in the viral video died of his injuries later. He has been identified as Mahavir Oraon, said to be in his early 60s. The fight among the extended family members took place after water overflowed from the community tank,” said Nagar Untari subdivisio­nal police officer, Pramod Keshri.

The officer said at least 10 others have also been injured in the incident.

Four of the injured were referred to Garhwa sadar hospital, while the others were under treatment at a local government hospital, Keshri said.

Two separate cases were filed in this connection, one each from the two affected parties.

A total eleven persons were named in each complaint, police said.

“They are being treated under police watch. No arrests have been made yet. We will proceed as per investigat­ion once they recover,” Keshri said.
