SAHIBGANJ WOMEN POLICE STATION INCHARGE RUPA TIRKEY WAS FOUND HANGING ON MAY 3 NIGHT

RANCHI: Governor Draupadi Murmu on Monday summoned director general of police (DGP) Niraj Sinha and sought status of investigation into the death of officer in-charge of Sahibganj women’s police station Rupa Tirkey last month, besides asking police to give “right direction to the probe”.

“The Governor called DGP Niraj Sinha to Raj Bhawan and sought status of investigation in the mysterious death of Sahibganj women police station in-charge Rupa Tirkey and also directed him to give right direction to the investigation,” a statement from Raj Bhawan said.

Twenty six-year old Tirkey was found hanging inside her official quarters at police line in Sahibganj on May 3 night. The Jharkhand police, which is pursuing the case as that of suicide, has already arrested Tirkey’s friend and sub-inspector Shiv Kumar Kanaujia on charges of harassment, that allegedly led to her death by suicide.

However, Tirkey’s family has been claiming the incident to be a case of murder, while demanding Central Bureau of

Investigation (CBI) probe into the matter. Her father Devanand Oraon has also filed a petition in the Jharkhand high court, urging it to set up a probe by the central agency into the alleged murder of his daughter. He stated that his daughter was killed and hanged by the accused.

He alleged that his daughter was harassed by some of her colleagues at the instance of Pankaj Mishra, the assembly representative of chief minister Hemant Soren, and another person identified as Dahu Yadav. Oraon alleged that going against Mishra’s wishes, her daughter refused to manage some of the cases pending before her. This led to her murder, he alleged.

Several tribal outfits have supported the claim, besides the opposition BJP targeting Mishra. A delegation of the BJP recently met the Governor on Sunday and demanded a CBI probe into the case.
