THE CM HAS ASKED THE OFFICIALS TO EXPEDITE THE RELIEF OPERATIONS

PATNA: With Ganga river flowing at unprecedented levels in different stretches of Bihar, chief minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday carried out an aerial survey to the affected areas and asked the officials to expedite the relief operations.

The Ganga, which has been in spate for the past few weeks, has set the new highest flood levels (HLF) at Bhagalpur, where it was flowing at a level of 34.81 metres against the danger level (DL) of 33.68m, and at Hathidah (43.46m against DL of 41.46m) in Mokama of Patna district, according to the data from water resources department.

A vast stretch of land in various districts from Buxar to Katihar has been inundated.

WRD officials said a portion of ring bund at Naugachhiya was flattened under the impact of turbulent water from the river, engulfing around five dozen villages in the subdivision in Bhagalpur district.

Kumar undertook an aerial survey of Khagaria, Bhagalpur and Begusarai districts and inspected relief centres. Talking to media persons, Kumar said the current spell of floods was not less devastating than that of 2016 deluge and officials had been told to ensure prompt relief to the needy.

Meanwhile, a Central Water Commission (CWC) report on Tuesday afternoon stated that the Ganga has started showing a receding trend across its course in Bihar, though it continued to flow above the danger levels at Digha Ghat and Gandhi Ghat in Patna and in Munger.

Ganga’s tributaries like Gandak, Bagmati, Burhi Gandak, Kosi, Sone and Punpun remained in spate, flowing above the DL at different stretches of their course in the state.

Opposition leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav also undertook a boat ride to assess the miseries of the people of Vaishali due to the floods. He also met the families of the children who died in a boat accident in the river Gandak on Monday and offered monetary help from the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) fund. He alleged that the relief being provided by the government for the marooned people was too less.
