PURNIA: A 35-year-old cardiologist allegedly commits suicide by injecting poison using an intravenous drip at the private super specialty hospital in Purnia town Monday late night, police said.

According to police, the deceased, identified as Dr Somnath Mukherjee (DM Cardiology), is a resident of Kolkata and has been working in the Max-7 hospital, Purnia, for the last three years and had performed a major cardiac surgery in the hospital on Monday. “The deceased did not leave any suicide note,” police said.

“The police have seized the mobile phone of the deceased besides some medicines. The police would probe the suicide from all possible angles,” said SK Saroj, a sub-divisional police officer (SDPO).

The SDPO did not rule out the possibility of personal problems leading to such an extreme step. “It is just 8 months since the marriage of the doctor was solemnised in Kolkata,” he added.

The SDPO said that a case has been registered under Section 174 of the CrPC (Police to enquire and report on suicide) and the body was shifted to Purnia government medical college and hospital for post mortem and the family members in Kolkata have been informed.

A police officer, without disclosing his identity, raised serious questions about the hospital. “The police will also probe the actions taken by the hospital to save his life. The hospital administration is equally responsible,” the officer said.

Meanwhile, the hospital administration is tightlipped over the incident and media persons have been denied entry.

“Every doctor works here under tremendous pressure” hospital sources said, adding that undue pressure might have forced him to take such an extreme step.
