Former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government on Sunday of creating confusion regarding the East Rajasthan Canal Project (ERCP).

He alleged that while the project is protecting the interests of Madhya Pradesh, the people of Rajasthan are being cheated.

“BJP is creating confusion about the ERCP project. They are cheating the people and the entire Rajasthan while Madhya Pradesh’s interests have been protected. Dams are being built there and they are getting benefits from it while Rajasthan is being cheated,” he said, while addressing the media in Dausa.

The BJP, after coming to power in the state, signed an MoU with the Central government, Rajasthan government and Madhya Pradesh government to address water requirements in eastern parts of Rajasthan.

The previous Congress government had accused the Centre of not giving ERCP national project status. The ERCP was envisaged by former BJP government led by Vasundhara Raje.

“They are trying to win the elections by cheating people. That is why they have deliberately brought a new name for ERCP,” added Gehlot.

Lauding the schemes launched by his government, the former CM stated, the public welfare schemes that his government had started are not available anywhere in the country.

“I would request the state government to not stop our schemes which were started from a humanitarian point of view,” he said.

Former deputy chief minister Sachin Pilot maintained that no compromise should be made with the interests of Rajasthan on the issue of ERCP.

He added that Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra is continuously raising the voice for the neglected sections un the country.

“Rahul Gandhi and the Congress party are doing the work of becoming the voice of youth, farmers and women, and every other section of the society who feels neglected today,” he stated.

He expressed hope that the Congress will perform better in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
