JAMSHEDPUR: The Jamshedpur Police and Purulia Police, in a joint operation, rescued a person kidnapped for an alleged ransom of ₹20 lakh in Jamshedpur city four hours after a complaint was registered at the Birsanagar police station, officials close to the matter said on Friday, adding that five men were held in connection with the case.

Police said that all the five accused, including the mastermind Doctor alias Chaman Khan, hailing from Baghmundi PS area in Purulia district of West Bengal, were arrested.

“Birsanagar police received a complaint that Niranjan Das, a private company employee, was forcibly taken away by five persons in an SUV from his house in AK Das Pars under Birsanagar PS late Thursday evening. The complaint was filed by Das’s wife, Asha Das. City SP Mukesh Lunayat immediately started monitoring the case, and city DSP Sudhir Kumar led a special team and got in touch with the Purulia police as soon as the accused vehicle was traced moving towards West Bengal,” Kishore Kaushal, Jamshedpur senior superintendent of police (SSP), told HT on Friday.

The SSP said that the vehicle was intercepted, and the kidnapped person was rescued safely. “All the accused were held and handed over to us,” the SSP added.

Apart from the main accused, 30-year-old Chaman Khan, the SSP identified the other arrested accused as Sudip Roy (32), Tapan Rajak (45), Karuna Rajak (30), and Vikas Singh Mura (27). He said that Chaman was developing a resort in the Ayodhya Hill area in Purulia.

“During interrogation, it emerged that Das had taken ₹1 lakh loan from Chaman Khan, who had taken huge money from other people in Baghmundi on the pretext of doubling their money. When they pressurised him to return their money, he misled them to Jamshedpur that he had given huge money to Das and he wasn’t paying it back. However, they have no documentary proof of the huge transaction they have been talking about.”

“Then all of them came to Birsanagar and took Das away. They planned to keep Das captive and demand a ransom of ₹15-20 lakh. The vehicle, an electronic tablet, and eight mobile phones have been seized. They have been sent to jail today,” added Kaushal.
