Lokpal directs CBI probe against Shibu Soren in DA plaint
The CBI will start probe into disproportionate assets complaint against JMM president Shibu Soren and his family following direction from Lokpal that delivered its judgement on Monday in a complaint petition by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey in 2020.
Dubey through his complaint had accused Rajya Sabha MP Soren of amassing disproportionate assets.
Lokpal, while giving its verdict on the complaint against Shibu Soren, has ordered the CBI to investigate the matter as soon as possible.
Lokpal has also directed CBI to complete the preliminary investigation of this case within six months. Besides, instructions have also been given to submit a copy of the investigation report to the Lokpal. After completing the hearing of this case, the Lokpal had recently reserved its decision.
“................. We, therefore, direct the DSPE/CBI to investigate these aspects of the matter u/s 20 (3) (a) of the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act, 2013. In pursuance to the provisions stipulated in Section 20(5) i.e., of the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act, 2013, the agency is directed to carry out the investigation as expeditiously as possible and complete the investigation within a period of six months from the date of this order. In this connection, attention is also drawn to Section 20(6) of the Act according to which a copy of the Investigation Report is to be submitted to the Lokpal. The CBI is at liberty to take necessary action at their level in respect of the findings emerging during their Preliminary Inquiry. The Lokpal of India is apprised of the progress of the investigation by way of sending monthly reports. The first such report is due on or before 30th April, 2024,” the operative part of order reads.
“While parting with this matter, we make it clear that regarding the 80-odd properties, acquired by the respondent public servant (RPS) and his family members prior to 7 years from the date of complaint i.e. 05/08/2020 and not covered by this order by virtue of limitation imposed under section 53 of the Act, but admittedly coming within the purview of PC Act, the complainant is at liberty to pursue his complaint with the Competent Authority,” the operative part of the order further reads.
JMM general secretary and spokesperson Supriyo Bhattacharya said they were open to any probe.
“We are not afraid of any probe. They have been given six months. Let them come up with whatever they want. What we don’t want is media trial,” he added.
