Jat community starts anti-BJP campaign

- Suresh Foujdar letters@hindustantimes.com

The members of Jat community from Bharatpur and Dholpur on Monday launched a campaign against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-state government alleging that the community was “deceived over the demand of reservation under the Other Backward Classes in central jobs.”

The Bharatpur-Dholpur Jat Aarakshan Sangharsh Samiti, spearheading the campaign, during the meeting on Monday also launched posters and decided to begin the “campaign to ensure the BJP’s defeat in Lok Sabha elections”, said people familiar with the development.

The Samiti will also launch a door-to-door campaign in the villages, in all eight assembly constituencies under Bharatpur Lok Sabha, belonging to the Jat community, against the BJP.

Samiti convener Nem Singh Foujdar said: “A meeting involving prominent members of the Jat community was called in on Monday to frame a strategy to defeat the BJP in Lok Sabha election. Jats continued stir for 40 days over the quota demands, but we only got false assurances. The BJP government cheated us.”

We have printed out at least 50,000 posters detailing our agenda against the party and these posters will be distributed in all the villages of the community, he said.

The poster with multiple pointers, which HT has seen, said: “Jats got cheated by BJP government over reservation... vote against BJP for our children’s bright future... firing on Jats in Haryana under the BJP government... exploitation of farmers...Jats officials in every department being targeted by the BJP government.”

Foujdar said at least 300 committee members will begin the on ground campaign from Wednesday. “Just like an election campaign, Jats will reach door-to-door to appeal people to vote against BJP. The BJP government cheated us over our reservation demand and the Jats will take revenge by defeating the party in the election,” Foujdar said.

Bharatpur Lok Sabha has eight assembly constituencies, including Nadbai, Weir, Bayana, Bharatpur, Deeg-Kumher, Nagar, Kaman, Kathumar with around 2.1 million voters with over 50,00,00 Jat voters.

Earlier in February, the Jat community members seeking reservation under Other Backward Classes in central jobs, had organised a sit-in in Jaycholi village for 40 days.

The central government on February 13 had called the delegation of Jats for talks over the quota demand where central OBC commission assured to submit a report to the Centre in this regard. But no decision was taken by the government.

Meanwhile, BJP MP from Bharatpur, Ranjita Koli said: “The BJP government is determined to provide quota benefits to the Jat community ,but it (the decision) has been pending due to some reasons. The BJP government will probably issue the notification of reservation after the elections.”
