Drive launched for peaceful elections

As a preventive measure for peaceful conduct of the upcoming parliament­ary elections, the Haridwar police have initiated a special drive against criminals, habitual offenders and anti-social elements in the district bordering Uttar Pradesh, officials aware of the matter said.

Haridwar police chief Pramendra Dobhal, stern action is being taken against criminals, trouble makers, history-sheeters and those having criminal background­s or those who indulged in illegal and anti-social activities.

“Fair and smooth conduct of parliament­ary elections is our major priority. In the past one week action has been taken against 162 accused under the Gunda Act and 88 under Section 110 of CrPC (security for good behaviour from habitual offenders) in the district. No one will be allowed to disturb law and order and impact the fair conduct of the parliament­ary election,” Dobhal said.

According to data provided by district police headquarte­rs, maximum action has been taken against such troublemak­ers in SIIDCUL, Jwalapur and Buggawala areas.

Areas where action has been taken against criminals include SIIDCUl police station (18 under Gunda Act, 7 under CrPC), Jwalapur (20 under Gunda Act,10 under CrPC), Kaliyar (5 under Gunda Act, 14 under CrPC), Buggawala (10 under Gunda Act, 10 CrPC and Jhabreda (8 under Gunda Act, 10 CrPC).

A joint flag march is also being taken out by the paramilita­ry force, Sashastra Seema Bal and the local police in different police station areas to ensure a peaceful atmosphere during the parliament­ary election, an official aware of the developmen­ts said.
